South Hylton is the terminus of the Sunderland extension, opened in 2002. The station serves a residential area. There is a single platform, at the end of an otherwise double-track branch; the platform however is long enough for two trains, and is referred to as Platform 1 (southern, terminal end) and Platform 2 (northern end)
